Why Use Guitar Stickers To learn Chords?

There are a number of goals, important to the guitar learning process, which may be greatly enhanced and or aided with the help of guitar stickers (fretboard stickers).

1. Visualize musical patterns with greater ease - One of the most important aspects of applied musical theory is being able to understand musical patterns such as chords and scales and, in the case of guitar, being able to visually recognize the guitar notes and other patterns with relation to the guitar fretboard. Guitar fretboard stickers allow the student to readily observe such patterns with greatly reduced mental effort. While it is of course important to eventually memorize such patterns without the help of stickers, guitar stickers are extremely helpful in initially helping students to become acquainted with the fretboard patterns to be learned.

2. Focus on technique rather than locating guitar note positions - One common difficulty encountered by the beginning guitar student is the problem of trying to focus on a number of things at once. Students must hold the plectrum (pick) correctly, strum notes or chords, think about the musical patterns being played, and articulate notes with (in most cases) the left hand, and all of these things must be done simultaneously. By using guitar stickers the student can free up one's mental efforts to focus on other aspects of learning until those aspects can be mastered. While it is of course important to eventually memorize the fretboard patterns being learned without the help of guitar stickers, the temporary use of stickers with note indicia, can be extremely beneficial during the most critical learning stages.

3. Learn to form new guitar chords with great ease - While the beginning student typically focuses on learning chords within the first three to five frets of the fingerboard, the intermediate and advanced player must learn to form chords across the entire span of the fingerboard. Guitar stickers with note indicia, allow students to recognize obscure patterns, enabling the student to form a more robust understanding of the fingerboard and chord vocabulary. Fret Daddy's "Basic Chords" Sticker set teaches the nine most essential chords using stickers to visually represent chord shapes.

4. Translate knowledge about one instrument to the guitar - Very often musicians who are fully competent with one instrument - say, for example, the piano - attempt to learn the guitar, but find the ever elusive guitar fingerboard less than obvious to navigate. Guitar stickers allow musicians who already understand musical patterns in the abstract to visually observe and understand how those patterns relate to the guitar specifically.

5. Put all of the pieces together - With guitar fretboard / fingerboard stickers as a visual tool, the task of putting all of the pieces together, from musical theory, to strumming, to articulation, to phrasing and pattern recognition, happens at a much quicker rate. While putting stickers on your guitar will not, in and of itself, turn you into a rock God, it certainly will help you move in the right direction.

6. Explore new phrases and patterns during songwriting - Intermediate and advanced guitar players may wish to use guitar stickers for song writing, since they help one to immediately recognize chords and patterns within a designated key.

7. Learn the fingerboard more quickly and effectively - Using fingerboard stickers is the fastest and easiest way to quickly identify the notes and patterns of the guitar fingerboard. Simply apply the appropriate stickers to the fingerboard of your guitar, and you will instantly have the information you need to learn in front of you.

Guitar Stickers?

Guitar Stickers are removable stickers that you can put on your guitar for one of two purposes: 1) decoration, or 2) learning. In the case that guitar stickers are used for decoration purposes, they may be placed in a variety of locations and may take a variety of shapes and sizes. Guitar stickers used for learning purposes are typically placed on the fretboard of the guitar. Fret Daddy specializes in manufacturing instructional guitar stickers only. We do not sell decorative guitar stickers at this time.

Stickers for guitar learning purposes typically include a number of common elements including: a special ultra-removable adhesive element, note indicia, which allows students to visually observe chords, notes, patterns, and other musical concepts. While there are a number of possible types of guitar stickers in theory, there are only a small handful of manufacturers of instructional guitar stickers in the world. DO NOT buy instructional stickers for your guitar from untrusted sources, as stickers that are placed on the fretboard of your guitar must be made of very specific materials to prevent surface wood damage. Guitar stickers that are not produced using state of the art adhesive technology may leave residue, permanent marks, or worse.

Fret Daddy ("fretdaddy, LLC") is the only authorized manufacturer of removable fretboard stickers in the United States as well as the exclusive owner of the patent pending fret sticker sticker technology used in Fret Daddy products.

The Guitar Notes

If you are a beginner guitar player and would like to learn guitar chords, riffs, scales, and songs, you will first need to learn the names of the notes of the guitar. This is a somewhat cumbersome memorization task that every guitar player must eventually take the time to undertake. But the benefits of knowing the notes on the guitar greatly outweigh the annoyance of taking the time to learn them.

The fingerboard of the guitar and the names of the guitar notes are not too mysterious, once you learn to spot the patterns. Essentially, the notes move upward, in alphabetical order until you arrive at G, then they start over again with 'A'.

Easy enough, right? Well, not quite. There are unfortunately a few wrinkles in this otherwise straight-forward rule of thumb. For example, some of the letter notes have other notes in between them called 'sharps and flats'. For example, the notes named 'A' and 'B' have a note in between them called 'A sharp/B flat'. 'Sharp' basically means 'one half step higher', and 'flat' basically just means 'one half step lower'. A half step is just one fret.

All the notes in ascending 'chromatic' order (from lowest notes to highest notes), starting from A and going to G, look like this:

A sharp/B flat
C sharp / D flat
D sharp / E flat
F sharp / G flat
G sharp / A flat

And repeat.

Notice that they the names of the guitar notes are in alphabetical order, at that some of the notes (but not all of them) have sharps and flats between them.

Once you know have memorized this information, all you need to know in order to figure out every note of the fretboard is the names of the open strings. The string that is closest to your head is called the low E string. It is called the low E string because it is the lowest string and because the note that you play when you play it is an 'E' note. Below are the names of each of the strings in order from your nose to the floor, while holding the guitar:

E – the low E string, also known as the 6th string
A – 5th
D – 4th
G – 3rd
B – 2nd
E – 1st

Study the chart below, which displays all the guitar notes, or, better yet, purchase the fretboard note map (available on this website), which allows you to easily place the names of the guitar notes right onto the surface of your fretboard in seconds.

The Fretboard Note Map guitar notes chart sticker set has all of these notes as well as the sharps and flats, color coded. The Note Map allows you to put all of the above notes on your guitar. The note map, when place on the surface of your guitar, looks something like the picture below, in the section entitled 'Notes on a guitar'. There is no better way to become acquainted with the guitar notes.

Notes on a Guitar

Learning the names of the notes on your guitar can be easy. The image below displays the guitar notes using the fretboard note map. Simply slip the stickers underneath the strings of your guitar and, VOILA! you've got yourself a quick reference, which you can leave on your guitar until you've learned the patterns.

Notes of the Guitar
You can purchase the fretboard note map here. The stickers can be safely left on the surface of all standard nitro-cellulose finished guitars for up to 6 months and have been rigorously tested for performance. Once you've learned the names of the notes you can advance to learn guitar scales, such as the A blues scale, the A minor pentatonic scale, the A harmonic minor scale, and many more. Every scale will help you learn how to jam and solo in various styles of music.

We recommend beginning with the Basic Chords sticker set and the fretboard note map. If you are an absolute beginner, these products will quickly get you up and running. Then as you progress, you can begin mastering the scales with the help of our other products.
